WRENTHAM — A truck driver who was charged with being drunk when he drove through fueling pumps and nearly went over a retaining wall at a Norfolk gas station in April has been sentenced to a year’s probation.
Keith E. Johnson, 54, of East Greenwich, R.I., was sentenced Tuesday in Wrentham District Court after admitting police had enough evidence to prove he was driving while intoxicated. He will also lose his license for 45 days, according to court records.
The case was continued without a finding for one year, which is a standard disposition for a first time drunken driving arrest.
Johnson was allegedly over twice the legal limit for intoxication when his box truck hit a traffic island about 1:45 p.m. on April 19 then went into Daley’s Service Center at Rockwood Road and Main Street in downtown Norfolk, according to police.
The truck careened through fueling pumps and struck two parked vehicles before stopping and dangling on the edge of a 10-foot retaining wall. Firefighters had to use a ladder truck to get Johnson out of the cab of the truck, according to police and fire officials.
Police say Johnson registered 0.20% on a portable breath test device. The legal limit for intoxication is 0.08%.
Johnson suffered minor injuries and was taken Milford Regional Medical Center, according to officials.
A reckless driving charge was also continued without a finding for one year with probation and Judge Thomas L. Finigan found Johnson not responsible on civil infractions of failing to drive in marked lanes and failing to wear a seat belt, according to court records.
