Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer.
Officials said the driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as Anthony Borden, 55, of Tuscumbia, Alabama, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Shortly after 5:30 a.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police JFK Memorial Highway Barrack received a report of a single-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-95, near Elkton. Preliminary investigations suggest that Borden, who was traveling north on I-95, suddenly swerved to the left for unknown reasons, colliding with the guardrail and causing the tractor-trailer to overturn.
Members of Newark’s Aetna House Hook and Ladder were the first to respond to the scene and took command. Crews from the Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown also responded, having been deployed to Cecil County to assist the Singerly Fire Company with an early morning house fire in Elkton.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found that Borden’s injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration implemented road closures to ensure the safety of both emergency personnel and passing motorists.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, with Maryland State Police working to uncover the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
The closure of the two left lanes of northbound I-95 has caused significant traffic disruptions for over eight hours.
