ST. LOUIS — A group of city trash truck drivers, who called in sick this week seeking better pay and working conditions, returned to the driver’s seat Wednesday, a city official said.
“Everybody was back today,” said Robert Atchisson, a spokesperson for the Streets Department. “Everything’s back on track.”
But it’s not clear how long the détente will last.
Workers told the Post-Dispatch earlier this week that they were demonstrating against low pay, heavy workloads and poor treatment from management. Their actions had consequences: On Monday, when 18 of around 50 total drivers were out, just over a third of the city’s trash routes got completed.
But their complaints were not necessarily resolved.
City officials met with employees about their concerns, but spent most of the time telling them how to file official complaints, a worker said.
