A tractor-trailer driver is being treated for serious injuries after he was struck with a hammer during an assault on Interstate 495, according to the Massachusetts State Police.MSP officials said that shortly before 2 p.m. Monday, state troopers responded to report of an altercation involving a weapon in the breakdown lane of I-495 south in Bolton.State police said that according to evidence, the tractor-trailer driver was assaulted by two men who were in a Volkswagen GTI hatchback.Another truck driver, Kevin Roach, said he witnessed the attack as he was driving by and stopped to help the tractor-trailer driver.”I look and I see this three individuals with a golf bag, golf clubs, just kind of with a guy on the ground just getting hammered,” Roach said. Sky5 flew over the area and saw two tractor-trailers stopped in the breakdown lane along the highway in Bolton. At least two State Police vehicles were also stopped, with one blocking the right lane. Just up the road, a tow truck was in the breakdown lane with at least one more State Police cruiser.Our 5 Alert Traffic Map showed delays building on the southbound side.The tractor-trailer driver was transported to Leominster Hospital, where he remains at this time, according to state police. Investigators from the Leominster State Police Barracks said the assault stemmed from alleged road rage. State police said the two assailants fled the scene in the Volkswagen before troopers arrived.”They had jumped back into their car and driven away, and that’s when I recorded the video,” Roach said.The assailants were spotted in Marlborough a short time later, and state police said Marlborough police officers stopped the Volkswagen and detained the occupants of the vehicle. State troopers then responded to Marlborough and took two men into custody.State police said one of the suspects was taken to Marlborough Hospital to be treated for injuries he sustained during the altercation.A female who was also in the Volkswagen at the time it was stopped in Marlborough was not charged in connection with the assault, according to state police.The charges being brought against the two suspects are being finalized, and MSP officials said they will provide an update on Tuesday.
