TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — A tow truck agency is speaking out after their employees were recently assaulted near the Strip in Tuscaloosa.
Ziggy Spires, the owner of Awesome Towing Company, said he and his crew were called to the College Station Apartments late Saturday night on a car parked in a tow-away zone.
Lee Averette and another driver were hospitalized after suffering a severe concussion, missing teeth and memory loss. They say they were beaten and pistol-whipped while attempting to tow the car of one of their attackers.
“By what I was told, the guys walked up, approached, didn’t say nothing. [No] ‘Hey that’s my car,’ or really nothing. Just walked up and got violent,” Averette said. “My knees and shoulder are messed up. I got bruises all up my arms.”
Spires said he jumped in to defend Averette and his other crew members.
“Of course, I come out of the truck, I’m going to defend my driver. It was pretty much just a brawl from there,” Spires said.
According to Tuscaloosa Police, the attackers drove off when officers and an ambulance arrived. Officers were then given a vehicle description and two of the men were flagged down and arrested for charges unrelated to the assault.
“It could have really taken a turn very badly. Some of my guys could have not come home. I could have not come home,” Spires said.
Tuscaloosa Police Department public information officer Stephanie Taylor said the suspects involved in this case are expected to be charged.
