FILE PHOTOHAMDEN — A tow truck driver fell 25 feet from an overpass on Route 15 after a Jeep crashed into a broken-down vehicle he was assisting Friday night, according to state police.
The crash occurred around 7:45 p.m. in the right shoulder of Route 15 north near Exit 60 in Hamden, Connecticut State Police said.
According to police, the tow truck was parked in the breakdown lane with its emergency lights flashing as the driver was attempting to tow a disabled 2005 Nissan Altima.
But a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling in the right lane veered to the right to avoid another vehicle that had slowed for traffic, police said, and crashed into the back of the Altima, which was pushed onto the flatbed of the tow truck.
During the crash, the tow truck driver, a 23-year-old Ansonia resident, fell from the Route 15 overpass onto a section of grass on Circular Avenue about 25 feet below, police said. He was sent to Yale New Haven Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
The Jeep driver, a 33-year-old New York man, was issued an infraction for failure to maintain proper lane, according to police.
