Truck driver Tony Justice – now a well-known songwriter, musician and performer – will be featured at 7 p.m. Saturday at the first Marietta Transfer Co. Truck Show at the Washington County Fairgrounds.
Admission is free and the day at the fairgrounds – 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. – also will include an anticipated 150 or more truck entries, eight to 10 food trucks, a country store, other vendors, and a 50/50 drawing. A local band, Jango, will open at 5:30 p.m. for Justice.
Proceeds from sponsors and the truck entries and vendor fees will benefit the Boys and Girls Club in memory of Gene Davis, one of the original founders of Marietta Transfer Co. Davis’ son, Dennis, said he wanted the free admission to encourage people to come and get a better perspective of what truck drivers are really like. Justice “hit the big road” when he got his CDL license in 2000.
“The best writing room in the world was the cab of my Peterbilt 379,” he said. “So basically I drove trucks and worked on my music for 22 years and now it’s finally paying off.”
Justice says he specializes in writing songs for the working class, “the truckers, construction workers, waitresses, warehouse workers, oil rig workers, and so on.” The first song he became widely known for was “Brothers of the Highway,” a single he recorded with Aaron Tippin. Then, in 2019, the video was released for “Last of the Cowboys.” The video had more than a million views within the first hour and a half it was posted, Justice said. “That was the song that turned my hobby into a business.”
