Farmington, N.Y. — A 46-year-old man was killed on the state Thruway Friday night when he jumped in front of a tractor-trailer in Ontario County.
The man was struck at about 7:24 p.m. in the eastbound lanes between Exit 44 (Canandaigua) and Exit 43 (Manchester) in the town of Farmington, according to a State Police news release Saturday.
One eastbound lane of the highway was closed until at 1 a.m., slowing traffic and causing delays. The crash happened at mile marker 344.5.
Troopers said reports were made to the Ontario County 911 Center that the man was having mental health issues.
He pulled his car over to the side of the highway. The car had its hazardous lights on.
A 59-year-old truck driver from Florida, John R. Lapolla, applied his brakes when the man jumped in front of the truck, troopers said. The truck driver, however, couldn’t stop before hitting the man.
The man was declared dead at the scene, troopers said. The name of the man was not released.
