Three people died early Thursday after a pickup truck hit a stalled car on the Bay Bridge near Treasure Island, the California Highway Patrol said.
The wreck happened about 4:15 a.m. in the eastbound direction of Interstate 80 just before the island, according to CHP spokesperson Officer Mark Williams.
All three people were in a MINI Cooper compact car, when it stalled on the freeway, Williams said. A pickup truck with only the driver hit it from behind.
The driver suffered major injuries but is expected to survive, Williams said.
The identities of the dead were not released by the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s office Thursday.
Williams said that drivers and passengers in a vehicle that stalls on the freeway or other major roadways have options.
“One is to activate your emergency hazard lights,” he said. “Try to move the vehicle to the far right lane. Hopefully, there is a shoulder, but if not, you’re in the best place you can be. If you’re comfortable and there’s a shoulder, try to safely exit your vehicle on the passenger side. On the bridge, there is a catwalk, and you can get onto it.”
Once those in the stalled car are out, they should walk away from the vehicle toward oncoming traffic, Williams said.
“If somebody approaching the stalled car hits it, then it’s gonna move that car forward,” he said. “So do not stand next to or in front of the stalled vehicle.”
If they opt to stay in the vehicle, “keep your seatbelt on and call 911 immediately,” Williams said.
The CHP shut down all five lanes of the freeway initially, and later opened two of them. All lanes of the freeway were opened and the scene cleared by about 6:45 a.m.
