A tow-truck driver died, and a worker cleaning up a diesel spill was injured Thursday morning when a pickup truck driver lost control on the Indiana Toll Road in LaGrange County, state police said.
Martin Troyer, 63, of Sturgis, Michigan, died at the scene of the 9:40 a.m. crash at the 114.2-mile-marker, state police at Bremen said in a statement. The crash occurred near Scott, about seven miles west of the Howe exit.
Police said a 31-year-old Brooklyn, New York, pickup truck driver towing a trailer lost control while traveling east on the Toll Road, went through the median and sideswiped the tow truck, which was parked on the inside shoulder of westbound lanes.
It continued east in the median, striking Troyer and a semi that had been in an earlier crash, police said. They said a worker with a remediation company cleaning up a diesel spill, who was not identified, also was hurt; the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Speed too fast for conditions is believed to be a factor in the crash, police said. They said roads were slick at the time because of snow that fell overnight and this morning.
The left lane of westbound Toll Road traffic was restricted for several hours, but reopened this afternoon, police said. The crash remains under investigation.
