KOZHIKODE: The search for Arjun, a Kozhikode native truck driver missing following a landslide in Shirur near Ankola in Uttara Kannada, continued on Tuesday.
Even on the eighth day after the disaster, rescuers are yet to find the vehicle, which is believed to have fallen into the Gangavali River.
However, providing a glimmer of hope, Navy’s sonar equipment detected signals pointing to possibility of a large object in the Gangavali River. Army’s deep search metal detector had earlier detected signals from the spot.
The search teams are planning to probe the area in detail on Wednesday. Heavy rains and strong currents on Tuesday posed challenges to Navy divers.
Meanwhile, Uttara Kannada district administration has sought the help of a firm specialized in drone-based search technology using radio frequency.
Palakkad native and major general (retired) M Indrabalan, associated with the firm, will reach Shirur on Wednesday and the drones and other equipment will be brought in from Delhi.
The Army and Navy continued their search along the river and its banks near the landslide site.
“The riverbed has changed following the landslide. There is heavy current in the river and there are issues with visibility and chances of entanglement of divers’ ropes in the debris in the river,” a defence personnel told media. Karwar MLA Satish Krishna Sail said that a 60-metre boom excavator is being brought to aid the search efforts in the river.
Search for Arjun continues, focus on ‘large object’ in river
The search for missing truck driver Arjun failed to yield any result on Tuesday. However, a sonar-based equipment of Navy detected signals from a spot in the Gangavali river, indicating possibility of a large object underneath.
Earlier, Army’s deep-search metal detector had also detected signals from the spot. The area will be probed on Wednesday. Heavy rain and strong currents deterred Navy divers from venturing into the river on Tuesday.
