An auto manufacturer headquartered in Virginia is bringing a new research and development facility to Novi, creating 200 jobs in engineering and design.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced recently that Scout Motors, an independent American auto manufacturer, backed by Volkswagen Group, is investing $11 million in Novi.
The Michigan Strategic Fund, which promotes economic development in the state, approved a $10 million grant for the project. Oakland County is also providing a $150,000 grant.
The jobs at Scout will pay an average of $193,000 annually.
The company was formed in 2022 to design and manufacture all-electric trucks and SUVs. International Harvester produced the original Scout SUV from 1960-1980. The company plans to revitalize the brand and begin vehicle production by 2026 at a plant in South Carolina.
“I was honored to represent Team Michigan on my international trade mission at the beginning of the year, helping close this deal and secure this cutting-edge facility in Michigan as we round out 2023,” Whitmer said in a release.
Whitmer said she met with company executives while traveling home from her international mission and made the case for Michigan’s business climate, talent pool, and leadership on electric vehicles.
Michigan was chosen for the expansion over competing sites in part because of automotive engineering talent in the state, the release said.
The release did not specify where the facility would locate in Novi. Company officials could not be reached for comment.
