Roy Thomas Robinson was granted complete healing on Thursday, November 16, 2023. He was born to Ernest and Inez (nee’ Howdeshell) Robinson, on April 26, 1932, in Redwater, Texas. He was preceded in death by his only son, John Ernest Robinson; his parents, his sisters, Ruth Hodges and LaVerne Creed; and his brother, Perry Robinson. A joyous reunion took place on that day, while a void was created for those still on this earth.
Roy is survived by his wife of 71 years, Dorothy Jenendel Robinson (nee’ Barnett); daughters, Theresa Barnett, and husband, the Reverend Robert Barnett, Susan Cross, Debra Smith, and husband, Aaron, and Sharon Stovall. Roy and Jenendel were proud to call 13 children grand, and were further blessed with six great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a number of nieces and nephews.
Roy lived a long and productive life, marked by an unmatched work ethic. He was, by trade, an experience a diesel mechanic. He loved the world of diesel trucks and the business of transport. Throughout his work life, he was employed by various trucking companies as mechanic, owned his own trucks as well as transport companies. During those years, he was affectionately named Father Time. That name stayed with him throughout the rest of his life. For the last 25 years of work, he drove a truck long haul, eventually settling into a dedicated route that allowed him time at home and with Jenendel. He retired on his 75th birthday.
Roy was a Korean War era veteran, having served in Trieste, Italy. Ever the patriot, he continued to serve in the National Guard and was proud of the military service of his sons-in-law and grandsons.
He would gladly share stories of his childhood, which never failed to entertain. He and Perry could kick up some dust! Other memories include those involving his long time friend, Marvin Bradford. Marvin was a lay preacher and he and Roy would go after work and on days off and preach on the street corners. That was who he was. An imperfect man, who knew the love of the Father and shared his faith, leading many to a knowledge of perfect love in Christ. Since his retirement, he has been in touch with a number of men, whose lives were saved through his unvarnished tough love and introduction to the Savior.
Roy and Jenendel moved their family to Little Rock, Ark., in 1965, and after 40+ years, moved to Benton to be close to Sharon and her family. They enjoyed their years in their little house there. Life took a turn in 2018, when a stroke left Roy with deficits that did not allow them to live alone. They relocated to Madison, Ala., where he was adored and tended to by a special dog, “Brownie”, ate his favorite foods, and listened to music, baseball games on TV, and reruns of Gunsmoke. He enjoyed his trips around the neighborhood via wheelchair until the day before he passed from this life. He remained pleasant and grateful with never a complaint. When he was asked if he’d had a good day he always replied “oh, it’s been a good day. I’ll see you in the morning. I love you.”
Our loss is most surely his gain. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Chapelwood Funeral Home in Texarkana, Texas, at 11 a.m. He will be laid to rest in the Chapelwood Memorial Gardens next to his son, John. There will be a viewing at 10 a.m. Family and friends are welcome. The family would like you to remember him by reading and sharing his favorite verse: Jeremiah 33:3. “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
