Repeat speed offenders would get speed limiters under New York bill

New York lawmakers are considering legislation that would crack down on serial speeders by requiring the installation of speed limiting technology.

A bill introduced by Assembly Member Emily Gallagher and State Senator Andrew Gounardes would penalize drivers who have multiple speeding violations by requiring speed limiting devices on their vehicles that would prevent them from exceeding the posted speed limit by 5 m.p.h.

The legislation would require the speed limiters for drivers who get six or more speeding or red-light camera violations in one year, according to CBS News.

The law would require at the speed limiter to remain installed on the vehicle for least 12 months.

The bill’s supporters hope that it will increase road safety and reduce traffic fatalities.

Last summer, New York City officials implemented a pilot program that prevented operators of city fleet vehicles from exceeding the local posted speed limit to improve road safety.
