LEAVENWORTH – The investigation into the mysterious death of 67-year-old Bridgeport man found in the back of his truck this month continues.
According to an official incident report filed by the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, William Hanna was found dead in his truck at around 1:30 p.m. at the gas station in Coles Corner near Lake Weantchee on Jan. 12, 2024.
According to the report, Hanna was on his way to work at a hospital in Everett when his truck slid off US 2 and into a ditch. A tow truck driver arrived on scene to pull it out of the ditch and had dropped Hanna and his truck off at the gas station in Coles Corner at US 2 and SR 207. The tow truck driver told authorities that Hanna said he was complaining of back pain, a persisting problem from his time in the Navy, and that he was going to take a muscle relaxer and walk around until his back stopped hurting. Hanna had denied aid at the scene from first responders.
A few hours later, Deputies say the tow truck driver drove past the same gas station and noticed Hanna’s truck was still there, piquing his curiosity, he peered through the truck’s windows but didn’t see Hanna. Later that evening the tow truck driver dined at a restaurant next to the gas station and noticed Hanna’s rig was still there. After eating, the tow truck driver looked again but didn’t spot Hanna. The following day, the two operator drove by again during a call and saw the truck in the same spot, prompting him to inspect once again. The man opened the truck door, finding Hanna inside on the backseat. Witnesses say Hanna was “cold to the touch” and appeared deceased. The temperature the night prior was reportedly -12 F.
Law enforcement were summoned to scene and subsequently confirmed that Hanna was dead.
Chelan County Coroner Wayne Harris says Hanna died of “natural causes.” Further inquiry about what those “natural causes” are being sought. It’s not known if the deceased had froze to death.
A missing person’s report on Hanna was filed out of Douglas County earlier in the day.
