The Colorado State Patrol operates the 10 ports, which are located in Cortez, Dumont, Fort Collins, Fort Morgan, Lamar, Limon, Loma, Monument, Platteville and Trinidad.
These fixed ports are strategically located in areas of the state that receive high volumes of truck traffic, according to the Colorado General Assembly website.
All commercial vehicles in excess of 16,000 pounds empty weight or 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight are required to clear a port of entry in Colorado, as are all vehicles displaying apportioned or gross vehicle weight license plates or any vehicle carrying an amount of hazardous materials requiring a placard.
Those vehicles must clear any port of entry within 5 road miles that the owner or operator would normally follow from point of departure to the point of destination.
PrePass and Drivewyze electronic clearance systems are used for pre-screening at port facilities in Colorado and allow for certain commercial vehicles to bypass a port of entry if specific requirements are met. Those requirements can be found on the PrePass or Drivewyze websites.
More information about requirements related to port of entry sites in Colorado is available on the frequently asked questions page of the Colorado State Patrol port of entry website. LL
