
The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a manhunt for a truck driver who allegedly caused a crash that left one person dead and four others injured at the Upper Iweka axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway by the defunct NITEL Office, Onitsha, Anambra State on Wednesday.
PUNCH Metro gathered that three vehicles, including a commercial bus with number plate AKL978XM, a truck with number plate AWK899ZQ and a commercial Mitsubishi L300 bus with number plate SKA439XA were involved in the crash.
It was gathered that the driver of the truck conveying bags of cement who was on a top speed, lost control and ran into the two commercial buses.
“While we were waiting to board a vehicle, we saw the truck coming with a speed and we suspected that it might have lost control, so most of us ran for our dear lives.
“Suddenly, the truck crushed two passenger buses along the road. The driver of the truck alighted from the vehicle and immediately ran away from the scene for fear of being lynched,” an eyewitness told our correspondent.
The spokesperson for the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, while reacting, said, “The Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng, has ordered an immediate manhunt for the driver of the truck on the run as preliminary information from the eyewitnesses revealed that the driver was reckless. Further details shall be communicated.”
The acting Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Command, Margaret Onabe, confirmed the accident in a statement on Thursday.
Onabe said, “Two male adults and three female adults were involved in the crash. One male adult (the driver of the shuttle bus) was killed while two male adults and two female adults were injured.
“As of the time of this report, the FRSC rescue team from RS5.31A Upper-Iweka, Onitsha, rushed the victims to Toronto Hospital, Onitsha, where one male adult was confirmed dead and his corpse was deposited at the hospital mortuary.
“The injured victims are currently receiving treatment. The team also ensured obstruction caused by the crash was cleared.
“The Sector Commander, Anambra State, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, sympathised with the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims quick recovery.”
