CHESTERFIELD — State police say a man is facing several traffic charges, including drunken and reckless driving, after he hit a fire truck that had responded to a call on southbound Interstate 95 late Saturday night.
Juan Sara Cruz, 25, was cited for driving under the influence, failing to move over for emergency vehicle, reckless driving, not having a valid license, and not wearing a seatbelt.
The incident happened around 11:20 p.m. Saturday on I-95 near the Willis Road exit. State Police Sgt. Jessica Shehan said the ladder truck was blocking the right travel and emergency lanes working an accident scene when it was hit by a pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed.
Shehan said Sara Cruz, the driver of the pickup, had changed lanes just prior to crashing into the fire truck. After striking the fire truck, Shehan said, the driver overcorrected and ran into another vehicle.
Two firefighters on the fire truck were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Shehan said two other people were injured and taken to other area hospitals.
The ladder truck suffered “significant damage” and had to be towed from the scene, Chesterfield Fire spokesperson Lauren Russell said in an email. As a result, I-95 was closed for an extended time.
An investigation into the crash is continuing.
