The pickup driver also died in the pileup between exits 41 and 42, cops said. Additionally, two people suffered life-threatening injuries in the wreck.
Connecticut State Police responded to the crash around 1:25 a.m. Sunday. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado pickup was traveling north in the southbound lanes, according to a preliminary investigation.
The Silverado driver first struck a Nissan Altima traveling south in the left lane, then continued into the center lane and smashed into a Nissan Sentra, cops said.
All three people in the Nissan Altima were killed, according to authorities. The two people in the Sentra were rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Silverado was also killed.
None of the drivers or passengers have been publicly identified. Police said they were still working to notify the victims’ relatives. The crash remains under investigation.
I-95 through West Haven, a New Haven suburb, was shut down for several hours as authorities investigated and cleaned up the wreck. The highway reopened around 7:30 a.m., according to News 12 Connecticut.
