Paccar is recalling a number of Kenworth and Peterbilt truck models after discovering an issue with the accelerator pedal.
According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall documents, Paccar is recalling more than 1,000 model year 2023-24 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks of various models. The throttle pedal assembly may contain an oversized magnet carrier, slowing the responsiveness or causing the pedal to stick, which can increase the risk of a crash.
Paccar trucks affected by the recall include (all model year 2023-24 unless otherwise noted):
- 2024 Kenworth T180
- Kenworth T280
- Kenworth T380
- Kenworth T480
- Peterbilt 535
- Peterbilt 536
- Peterbilt 537
- Peterbilt 548
A safety recall report explains that the magnet carrier acts as the pivot for the throttle pedal. Consequently, an oversized magnet carrier may cause the throttle pedal to bind. Paccar attributes the oversized magnets to an issue with the molding tool.
If an accelerator pedal does not return to idle upon release, applying the service brake can correct the issue. However, introducing fluids to the components could make the issue worse.
This recall stems from a larger equipment recall issued by the electronic throttle pedal manufacturer Orscheln. That recall effects more than 4,000 throttle pedals that were sold to Paccar and specialty truck manufacturer Oshkosh.
As of Jan. 14, Paccar had received five warranty claims but no related field reports. No reports of deaths or injuries had been received.
Authorized Paccar dealers will inspect and replace the throttle pedal if necessary for free. Notification letters to owners of affected trucks are scheduled to be sent out on March 17.
