Paccar is recalling thousands of Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks of various models after discovering an issue that can cause the hazard lights to not function.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Paccar is recalling more than 5,000 model year 2023-26 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks that may have a faulty exterior lighting switch. A failed switch could cause the hazard lights and the instrument display backlight brightness adjustment to not function. Affected trucks do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 101, “Control and Displays,” and 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment.”
If hazard lights fail to work, other vehicles will not be alerted. Regarding the instrument panel display, if a driver is unable to adjust the brightness, critical safety information may be difficult to see. An inadequately lit instrument panel could also distract the driver. Consequently, improperly functioning hazard lights and instrument display backlights can increase the risk of a crash.
Affected Paccar trucks include:
- 2025 Kenworth T180
- 2025-26 Kenworth T280
- 2023-26 Kenworth T380
- 2024-26 Kenworth T480
- 2025 Peterbilt 535
- 2024-26 Peterbilt 536
- 2024-26 Peterbilt 537
- 2024-26 Peterbilt 548
- 2025 Peterbilt 567
As of Jan. 20, Paccar had received five warranty claims and 12 reports about trucks in the field that may be related to the exterior lighting switch issue. There have been no reports of injuries or deaths related to a malfunctioning light switch.
Paccar estimates that only about 1% of the more than 5,000 trucks in the recall population have a faulty exterior lighting switch.
Dealers will update the vehicle cab controller unit (VECU) software on affected trucks for free. Paccar is letting truck owners know that a nonresponsive switch can be temporarily reset by a key cycle.
Notification letters to owners of affected Paccar trucks will be sent on March 30.
