David Jackson said it was a matter of 15 seconds between him getting home safely and ending up in the trauma center, where he is now, awaiting a third surgery.Jackson said he was hooking up his friend’s trailer on the side of Highway 75 near Childs Road in Bellevue around 7 p.m. Monday night.”It’s like any truckers, we help each other out and especially in our same outfit,” Jackson said. “We help each other out, and that’s what I was doing.”But when he went to grab his traffic cones, a jeep hit him. “When it got that close and I felt the thump, I thought I was dead,” Jackson said. “I saw it coming. I tried to brace and to get away from it, but I wasn’t fast enough.”Jackson said he skid across the ground at least five feet.”I couldn’t feel my legs,” Jackson said. “I couldn’t look up to see what happened. I didn’t know. All I know is from my hip down, I was. I felt cold, numb, and I was laying there just waiting for traffic.”And the worst part, Jackson said, was traffic wasn’t slowing down.”The scariest part was when you’re laying next to the rumble strips in the car and still going by and they don’t see you,” Jackson said. “That’s the scariest part because I could have hit, got hit twice.”The driver who hit Jackson drove off. “Now it’s a hit-and-run,” Jackson said. “You could have just stopped and made things a lot better just stopping.”But, not before leaving evidence behind. Sarpy County deputies recovered a right-side front and rear fender flare from the scene. Now they’re looking for a 2007-2017 maroon Jeep Wrangler with passenger-side damage.”I know my body didn’t break the fenders I guarantee the truck did,” Jackson said. “If you hit something, why don’t you stop?”Now, Jackson has two fractures in his lower left leg, a fractured and dislocated elbow and kneecap and severe road rash. He said he won’t be able to walk or work again for at least four months. “I’m the main income for my house now,” Jackson said. “It’s totally gone and I don’t know where I’m going to see it again. I got four kids, a wife, me, mortgage, utilities, you know, truck trailer payment, car insurance, car payments. Now I got this on top of it.”Feeling fortunate to still be here, Jackson said he hopes other drivers will start following the law.”If you’re driving, see flashers, slow down and move over,” Jackson said.Jackson is urging the driver who hit him to turn themselves in. Again, investigators think the vehicle that hit him is a maroon Jeep Wrangler. Call Sarpy County Crimestoppers at 402-592-STOP (7867) or email [email protected] if you can help. David Jackson said it was a matter of 15 seconds between him getting home safely and ending up in the trauma center, where he is now, awaiting a third surgery.
Jackson said he was hooking up his friend’s trailer on the side of Highway 75 near Childs Road in Bellevue around 7 p.m. Monday night.
“It’s like any truckers, we help each other out and especially in our same outfit,” Jackson said. “We help each other out, and that’s what I was doing.”
But when he went to grab his traffic cones, a jeep hit him.
“When it got that close and I felt the thump, I thought I was dead,” Jackson said. “I saw it coming. I tried to brace and to get away from it, but I wasn’t fast enough.”
Jackson said he skid across the ground at least five feet.
“I couldn’t feel my legs,” Jackson said. “I couldn’t look up to see what happened. I didn’t know. All I know is from my hip down, I was. I felt cold, numb, and I was laying there just waiting for traffic.”
And the worst part, Jackson said, was traffic wasn’t slowing down.
“The scariest part was when you’re laying next to the rumble strips in the car and still going by and they don’t see you,” Jackson said. “That’s the scariest part because I could have hit, got hit twice.”
The driver who hit Jackson drove off.
“Now it’s a hit-and-run,” Jackson said. “You could have just stopped and made things a lot better just stopping.”
But, not before leaving evidence behind. Sarpy County deputies recovered a right-side front and rear fender flare from the scene. Now they’re looking for a 2007-2017 maroon Jeep Wrangler with passenger-side damage.
“I know my body didn’t break the fenders I guarantee the truck did,” Jackson said. “If you hit something, why don’t you stop?”
Now, Jackson has two fractures in his lower left leg, a fractured and dislocated elbow and kneecap and severe road rash. He said he won’t be able to walk or work again for at least four months.

Feeling fortunate to still be here, Jackson said he hopes other drivers will start following the law.
“If you’re driving, see flashers, slow down and move over,” Jackson said.
Jackson is urging the driver who hit him to turn themselves in. Again, investigators think the vehicle that hit him is a maroon Jeep Wrangler. Call Sarpy County Crimestoppers at 402-592-STOP (7867) or email [email protected] if you can help.
