A New Hampshire woman was seriously injured after being flung from inside an apartment complex dumpster into a garbage truck but survived the harrowing ordeal, according to local reports.
Monday morning was like any other morning for sanitation workers in Manchester until a truck driver noticed a woman inside the compactor portion of his vehicle, the Manchester Ink Link reported.
The driver called 911 and the fire department rushed to the scene to rescue the woman.
The fire department was told the truck had emptied the dumpster and compacted the trash up to four times before the woman was noticed, Manchester Fire Battalion Chief Bob Beaudet told the outlet.
The woman was conscious and alert when crews arrived, but was injured and unable to escape without aid.
“She had some injuries, so she couldn’t get out on her own,” Manchester Fire Chief Ryan Cashin told WHDH. “So we had to drop the basket in — first thing we did was make contact with her and make sure she was OK.”
Rescuers entered the truck from the top using ground ladders, stabilized the woman and put her in a basket to be lifted out of the truck, according to the Manchester Ink Link.
She was taken to the hospital and treated for serious injuries, including broken bones. Unknowns still remain as to how and why she ended up in the dumpster.
“I can tell you that she was not an unsheltered individual but as to why she was in there, we don’t know that yet,” Cashin said.
According to Boston 25 News, she said she was taking out trash and fell into the dumpster.
