Nashville, TN police arrest dump truck driver after deadly shooting at a gas station

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A driver of a dump truck has been arrested and charged after police say he allegedly shot and killed a man at a North Nashville gas station Monday evening.

Metro police were sent to the 7-Eleven in 2200 block of Brick Church Pike just before 6 p.m. to respond to reports of a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. 

The man was taken TriStar Skyline Medical Center where he died, according to officers at the scene. 

After the shooting, an arrest report states that officers viewed the gas station’s surveillance footage which showed a man — identified as 52-year-old Reginald Ewin — get into a physical altercation with the victim. 

During the altercation, authorities reported that Ewin was seen pulling out a pistol from his waistline and started shooting while the victim was in close proximity. 

An arrest report states as Ewin began to shoot, the victim turned and began to run away. However, officers said the footage showed that Ewin continued to fire upon the victim multiple times until he collapsed. 

After the victim collapsed, video surveillance allegedly showed Ewin getting into his dump truck, which was parked on the side of the road, and fleeing the scene southbound on Brick Church Pike.  

Metro police said witnesses called 911 after they were able to get a tag number for the dump truck as it drove away. 

According to an arrest affidavit, about 15 minutes after the shooting, officers were sent to the scene of a hit-and-run crash involving a dump truck in the parking lot of a store located in the 1400 block of County Hospital Road. 

A witness allegedly provided the license plate number for the dump truck, which police said matched the number that was given by witnesses at the shooting scene. 

Metro police said they were able to locate the dump truck at a convenience store in the 7100 block of Charlotte Pike, where Ewin was then taken into custody. 

In an arrest report, officers said Ewin was wearing the same clothing that was seen in the gas station’s surveillance footage. 

Ewin refused to speak to detectives and was charged with criminal homicide. He remains jailed without bond.
