Multiple lanes of NB U.S. 131 closed at S-Curve after semi-truck rollover

UPDATE: As of 10 a.m. Friday, all northbound U.S. 131 lanes have been shutdown at Wealthy Street for the environmental cleanup.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Multiple lanes are closed Friday morning on northbound U.S. 131 at the S-Curve due to a semi-truck rollover crash that leaked milk onto the interstate.

The crash was reported by the Michigan Department of Transportation just before 7:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 24.

Michigan State Police say only one lane of travel is open on the northbound lanes at the S-Curve. MDOT cameras show large traffic backups leading to the crash, which MDOT reported happened on U.S. 131 near Market Avenue.

Grand Rapids firefighters around 7:40 a.m. said the semi-truck was leaking both milk and diesel fuel. Firefighters said the semi-truck rolled over.

Michigan State Police said northbound U.S. 131 will be fully shutdown sometime later on so that crews can conduct an environmental cleanup. State troopers said the semi-truck was a milk tanker.

State troopers said the milk cannot be washed off the roadway, as it can be toxic for fish in the water system. A portion of the S-Curve sits above the Grand River.

State troopers say the tanker truck driver was uninjured and that speed appears to be a factor in the crash. Travelers are advised to take an alternate route.
