An off-duty police officer tracked down a pickup truck driver who fled the scene after being involved in a crash that left a motorcyclist severely injured in Island Lake Wednesday, police said.
The Wauconda Fire District and Island Lake Police Department responded around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday to Route 176 and Lakeview Drive in Island Lake for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Island Lake Police Chief Jennifer Paulus told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that officers arrived and found a crash involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck.
The motorcycle, driven by an adult male, was traveling eastbound on Route 176.
The pickup truck, driven by Brandon C. Warren, 27, of Elgin, was also traveling eastbound on Route 176 and it came to a stop in the roadway, Paulus said.
The motorcycle crashed into the rear of the pickup truck, causing the male operator to be ejected.
Paulus said that Warren, who was actively wanted on a warrant in a separate fleeing the scene of a crash incident, fled the scene in his pickup truck.
An off-duty Island Lake police officer came upon the scene and witnesses told him the truck fled the scene.
Paulus said the off-duty officer knew other officers were responding to the scene and witnesses were tending to the victim, so he began searching the area for the pickup truck.
The officer located the truck at Roberts Road and Rawson Bridge Road in Port Barrington and stopped it.
Officers took Warren into custody and transported him to the McHenry County Jail. He was charged with leaving the scene of an injury crash, a Class 4 felony.
Paulus said Route 176 was briefly shut down by police until a tow truck could remove the motorcycle from the scene.
The motorcyclist was rushed to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville by ambulance.
He suffered severe injuries to his ribs and legs that required surgery, Paulus said.
The victim was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital but is expected to survive.
Warren appeared in court for an initial hearing Thursday morning.
McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge ordered Warren held on a combined $13,000 bond.
Warren was released from the jail after posting 10% of his bond, court records show.
