A 20-year-old motorcyclist has died as a result of a hit-and-run crash in Dumfries Wednesday night, and police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who fled the scene of the crash and later abandoned the vehicle.
Officers responded at 10:19 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 and found that a motorcyclist and the driver of a 2020 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck collided at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Pine Bluff Drive in Dumfries near the new Chick-fil-A restaurant.
The police investigation determined that the motorcycle was traveling southbound on U.S. 1 at a high rate of speed and collided and with the pickup truck, which was heading north. The pickup entered the intersection in front of the motorcycle’s path, according to Master Police Officer Renee Carr, a Prince William County police spokeswoman.
The motorcyclist, Joseph Emmanuel Word, 20, of Dumfries, separated from the bike and was transported to an area hospital, where he later died, Carr said in a news release.
The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene, and the pickup truck was later located unoccupied behind a nearby business. A police K-9 attempted to search for the suspect, who was not located.
Anyone with information about the crash or knows anyone involved is urged to contact the Prince William County Police Department at 703-792-7000 or submit a webtip to pwcva.gov/policetip.
