Failure to control: Smith Road
An officer at 1:34 a.m. May 29 went to a parking lot due to a car making a “thumping’ noise and smoking. He saw a man standing at the rear of the car. He then saw what appeared to be a large amount of windshield washer fluid on the ground draining from the front end of the car. The front passenger side tire was completely flat and there was a large bend in the rim that was missing its decorative hubcap. The front lower plastic splash guard was ripped off and missing. A second man was partially underneath the car on the front passenger side trying to position a scissor jack. The man standing at the car’s rear said he was going eastbound on Smith Road when he hit an unknown object or pothole, causing a flat tire. He got the car to the lot and called a friend to help him change the tire. The car’s owner slurred his words when talking. The officer smelled alcohol on his breath. He told the officer he consumed two beers while previously at his girlfriend’s home. The officer ran him through field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was arrested for drunken driving. The officer found a receipt in the suspect’s pocket for two beers at a nearby tavern. The officer canvassed the area for signs of a car accident. He found a row of large boulders on a tree lawn. One was moved out of line. He found a fresh tire track on that tree lawn with a large plastic splash guard on the ground next to it. He also found a hubcap with large scrapes and chunks missing from it. The parts recovered matched those missing from the car in the lot. The car was towed. The driver was cited for drunken driving and failure to control. He measured a .192 chemical breath test.

However, she immediately began dry heaving and turned red. She said she was anxious. She said she thought the light turned green and put her foot on the accelerator. The car then hit the back of the one in front of her. She said she had a temporary driver’s license, but she did not have it with her. She gave her name and date of birth. Dispatch had a difficult time finding data on her. The officer asked the boyfriend the name of his girlfriend. He gave one name but then gave him her true name. The officer found she had several warrants for dangerous drugs and contempt of court through Lorain and North Olmsted. She was handcuffed and placed into the cruiser. The officer called for backup. He assisted the man out of the truck by unbuckling his seat belt and grabbing his arm. The passenger jumped out of the car and interfered by yelling and recording the incident. The driver gave the officer his first name and said he didn’t have to follow his instructions. He was taken to the cruiser. During this time, the driver had a gun holstered to his hip. He was disarmed. He was cited for obstructing official business.
