A 47-year-old man who was killed when his vehicle collided with an 18-wheeler going the wrong way on Interstate 83 early Monday morning has been identified.
Hendry Nunez of Baltimore County, Maryland, was killed in the crash, which caused his car to go over an embankment, according to the York County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy on Nunez completed at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown Tuesday revealed that Nunez died from multiple blunt force injuries he received in the accident.
The crash happened in the southbound lanes near mile marker 19 on I-83, according to the York County Coroner’s Office, with the coroner’s office called to the scene at 2:52 a.m.
Pennsylvania State Police, who investigated the crash, said the driver of a tractor-trailer attempted to enter the interstate by heading north on the southbound off ramp against traffic.
The driver of the second vehicle was heading south on the interstate when he crashed into the 18-wheeler. The vehicle was knocked over an embankment, overturned and came to rest against a tree.
Nunez died at the scene. York County Deputy Coroner Michele Kirchner went to the scene and certified the death.
The condition of the truck driver was not known, according to the coroner’s office. There was no word from state police if the truck driver received any citations as a result of the crash.
The coroner’s report noted that the southbound ramp north of Market Street is closed for repairs. A detour directs southbound traffic to another onramp south of Market Street on Belmont Street, next to The Belmont Theatre. That onramp is directly next to the offramp the tractor-trailer driver used to enter the interstate.
The state Department of Transportation closed the ramp when an inspection revealed a steel beam on the bridge spanning Market Street had deteriorated to the point of needing repair. It was damaged several years ago by a vehicle strike, according to the department. The recent bridge inspection revealed further deterioration to the beam. For safety purposes, the ramp from Market Street to southbound I-83 was closed.
Repairs to that beam are set to begin on Wednesday.
