A man was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer driver in Queens who kept going after the early Thursday crash, police said.
The victim was riding through Flushing on an electric scooter when he was struck by the driver of the 18-wheeler making a left from Northern Blvd. onto Parsons Blvd. at about 6:15 a.m. cops said.
The victim was thrown from his scooter and suffered a massive head injury. He died at the scene.
The rain-soaked asphalt was left covered in the victim’s blood. His name and age were not immediately released.
“I don’t think he knew he hit him,” a police source at the scene said of the tractor-trailer driver.
Cops are looking for the vehicle, described as a red tractor-trailer with Maine license plates, and its driver.
A vehicle fitting that description was later found on Northern Blvd. near 107th St. — about 2 miles from the crash — but it wasn’t immediately clear if it was the same vehicle, police sources said.
The corner of Northern and Parsons Blvds. is a major Flushing intersection involving 10 lanes of traffic, including turning lanes. There’s also a shared bicycle lane on Parsons Blvd.
Deepah Sharma, who works at a nearby Shell gas station, said the corner is a problem intersection.
“So many times I see accidents here, especially in the rain. Car people just follow lights. They don’t see. They see green light and go straight,” he told the Daily News, recalling that a similar nonfatal crash recently happened at the same corner.
“A couple weeks ago this happened also, but the guy is OK,” he said. “The car hit him.”
The corner could use more police enforcement, said Sharma, adding that all scooter and bike riders should be forced to wear helmets and have a license to prove they have been instructed about road safety.
“[They] should be needing a license to driving the bike,” he said.
