A man has died after being struck while on his bicycle Sunday morning in Florence, according to Boone County deputies.Deputies say they were called to a crash with injury near the 10000 block of Dixie Highway in Florence just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Officials say the initial report came in regarding a man lying on the side of the roadway.Authorities say arriving deputies located the man, later identified as 38-year-old Simon Aguilar, lying in the grass adjacent to the roadway, as well as a heavily damaged bicycle.Officials say Aguilar had severe injuries and first aid was immediately rendered until the arrival of Florence Fire/EMS units.Deputies say a short time later, additional responding deputies found an abandoned black Ford F-150 that was blocking the southbound lane of Dixie Highway a short distance south of where Aguilar was lying.Officials say they quickly determined a collision occurred between the abandoned truck and Aguilar, with the truck’s driver fleeing the scene on foot.Deputies say they determined Aguilar had been traveling southbound on his bicycle, between Beeson Drive and White Pine Circle, and was struck from behind by the truck. Officials say the impact forced Aguilar to be ejected from the bicycle to where he was found by deputies.According to deputies, Aguilar was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Florence, where he was later pronounced dead.Authorities say the investigation into the crash is ongoing. Officials say speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash, though the driver was suspected to have been intoxicated at the time of the collision.Deputies say they have identified a suspect, but are not releasing suspect information – including a name – at this time, citing the ongoing attempt to locate the suspect.
