HERNANDO, Miss. – A man has been arrested and charged after a crash on I-55 in Mississippi left another man dead, according to the Hernando Police Department (HPD).
HPD said that 37-year-old Matthew George Nemacheck of Palmyra, Wisconsin has been charged with culpable negligent manslaughter.
Deputies from Crittenden County, Arkansas were chasing Nemacheck in a blue Dodge Ram down I-55 in Hernando around 12:30 p.m. when the 37-year-old crossed the median and hit an 18-wheeler, according to HPD.
The crash shut down that part of I-55 in DeSoto County for hours after the car burst into flames. Nemacheck’s truck was loaded on a flatbed, crunched and burned. The cab of the semi-truck it hit was torn completely off by the impact and its trailer was destroyed.
That truck driver, 40-year-old Milan Alilovic of New York, died at the scene, police said.
Nemacheck was taken to Regional One in Memphis for his injuries and then released to the DeSoto County Detention Center where he was charged and given a $350,000 bond, according to HPD.
People who live nearby said they can remember when DeSoto County was peaceful and wish there was a way to keep the crime away.
“I don’t think we need to restrict our police at all. I think that’s part of the problem. We have tied their hands and criminals know they can get by with things,” Hernando resident Edward Prince said. “When I was a child, part of being arrested was they were going to use the blackjack on your head as they put you in. It didn’t really matter what you had done.”
