KENNER, La. — The ice cream truck driver who crashed into an apartment, critically injuring a 12-year-old boy, was arrested Wednesday. 71-year-old Mechael Yousef Mansoor of Kenner was arrested for negligent injuring and reckless operation of a vehicle.
The crash happened Saturday afternoon while 12-year-old Adrian Fajardo was playing video games in his bedroom. His family said the truck crashed into his room and pushed him through two walls, leaving him trapped beneath debris. Kenner police said he was found within 10 minutes and taken to a hospital.
It’s still not clear exactly why Mansoor sped and crashed into the apartment. Investigators are still looking into it. They did rule out any medical issues or mechanical issues. Police said he did not appear impaired but are waiting for medical records.
Adrian’s family has spent days trying to hold onto hope. He arrived to a hospital critical with broken bones. Doctors told the family he may be brain dead.
“The first thing they did was surgery to his brain because it was swelling, broken bones all over but the main concern was his brain,” Adrian’s uncle, Joel Orellana, said Tuesday.
They are praying for a miracle.
“There’s always hope. When you’re a believer, there’s always hope,” another uncle, Luis Maradiaga, said Tuesday.
The Blood Center said Adrian has already received at least 16 blood transfusions and may require more. To help, you can donate blood at a Blood Center location. Tell the staff it’s a replacement for Adrian Fajardo and a donation will be given to his family to help with medical costs.
