OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – A 21-year-old Jenison man was critically injured Tuesday, Oct. 10, in a crash with a semi-tractor trailer on Chicago Drive at 80th Avenue in Zeeland Township.
His name has not been released.
The crash happened around 3:30 p.m., Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies said.
The investigation showed that the injured man was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix east on Chicago Drive, near 80th Avenue, when the driver of the semi-truck, going east, attempted to complete a Michigan turn and pulled into the path of the Grand Prix.
The car struck the side of the truck’s trailer, pinning the driver inside until he could be freed by Zeeland Township firefighters. He was taken by ambulance to a Grand Rapids hospital.
The truck driver, a 48-year-old Jenison man, was not hurt. Both drivers used seat belts, police said.
Westbound lanes are now open but eastbound lanes are closed.
Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate.
Zeeland police, state police and AMR paramedics assisted.
