A Kansas farmer and his son are being hailed as “true heroes” after springing into action to stop a semi-truck when the driver passed out and the vehicle headed toward an overpass.
The semi-truck driver was traveling along Interstate 70 on Dec. 19 and “blacked out” behind the wheel after a medical incident, Sheriff Burton Pianalto of the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said on Facebook.
The truck then “went into the median at highway speeds” and continued for about a quarter of a mile before starting to slow down after it “jumped over a crossover,” Pianalto said.
That’s when Brent Ginther and son Brady saved the day.
Brady jumped on the passenger side of the moving vehicle in an attempt to get into the cab, but the door was locked. He then asked his dad to throw him a hammer, which he used to break the window.
Once inside, he was able to stop the truck before it reached a nearby overpass with a 30-foot drop onto a highway.
“This action more than likely saved the life of the truck driver along with protecting all the other travelers on I-70 and Highway 27,” Pianalto said. “It is amazing what people will do to help others they do not know.”
Brent Ginther told KWCH that he and his son were just in the right place at the right time.
“We appreciate everything, and (we’re) just good farm guys, and we’d help anybody in a situation if anybody needed help,” he said, per the outlet.
