AHMEDABAD: Thieves stole garlic worth Rs 20,000 and arecanut (supari) worth Rs 64,000 while a truck driver stopped to relieve himself by the side of the road near Shertha in Gandhinagar.
The thieves cut open the tarpaulin and made off with 60kg of garlic and 130kg of arecanut from the truck.
Adalaj police are ascertaining the veracity of the driver’s claims, as he approached police nearly a week after the alleged theft.
According to the FIR, Aniq Mansuri, a truck driver from Kadi in Mehsana district, was ferrying the load from Mehsana to Ahmedabad.
The investigating officer, PSI S D Chaudhary, said that Mansuri had stopped his truck and got out to urinate about 2km from the Shertha toll booth on Feb 1.
“He parked the truck by the side of the road. When he returned a couple of minutes later, he found that the tarpaulin was cup open. He later found that 130kg of arecanut and 20kg of garlic was missing,” Chaudhary said.
She added that they are trying to get CCTV footage from nearby, because the site of the alleged theft is a secluded spot and did not have any cameras.
This is the theft of garlic in a week and comes while prices of garlic have skyrocketed.
