A commercial airliner with more than 230 people on board was making a landing at a metro New York City airport Sunday when it struck a tractor-trailer on a nearby highway, injuring the driver.
The plane, which also struck a light pole, landed safely. The pole struck a passing vehicle.
The incident occurred Sunday at about 2 p.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a statement, which read:
“While on approach to land at Newark Liberty International Airport, United Airlines Flight 169 struck a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike around 2 p.m. local time on Sunday, May 3. The Boeing 767 landed safely and was arriving from Venice, Italy. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide any updates.”
The New York Times today reports the driver of the tractor-trailer, which was on the New Jersey Turnpike at the time of the incident, was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and discharged.
No passengers or crew members on the plane were injured when the landing gear tire and bottom of the aircraft struck the tractor-trailer and pole. There were 221 passengers and 10 crew members on the Boeing 767-400 aircraft.
The plane landed safely.
