A Forsyth man died Friday in a crash outside of his hometown on Interstate 94.
The 78-year-old was driving a sedan that collided with a semi-truck, according to Montana Highway Patrol. Emergency crews declared the Forsyth man dead as soon as they arrived at the crash, which shut down a portion of the interstate for several hours.
The wreck occurred at around 2:30 p.m., along the interstate as it runs past Forsyth. The 78-year-old was merging onto I-94 to enter the eastbound lanes. The driver of the semi-truck driver, a 43-year-old man from Louisiana, was also traveling east and moved into the left lane while the sedan merged onto the interstate. The driver of the sedan then turned left, into the path of the semi-truck.
The two vehicles crashed in the left lane, with the impact sending the sedan and semi-truck through the median and into the westbound side of I-90. While the circumstances of the crash and still under investigation by MHP, speeding and intoxication are not suspected to be factors. The semi-truck driver was not harmed in the wreck.

Friday’s crash was one of two that occurred on I-94 within the same afternoon. While crews were still clearing the wreckage from the crash near Forsyth, there was another crash with injuries a few miles to the east, according to a statement from the Rosebud County Sheriff’s Office.
So far this year, there have been at least 146 people killed on Montana’s roads, according to MHP data. Fatal crashes are down compared to the 162 fatalities recorded at around this same time last year.
Earlier this month, a Roundup man was killed when he was trying to cross Montana Highway 87 north of Roundup. While riding in a UTV, the 79-year-old apparently did not see an oncoming pickup truck.
