With a pair of trucking parking pilot initiatives on the table, Florida’s Turnpike officials are turning to truckers for feedback on the proposed projects.
On Thursday, July 16, the group will host two virtual open house sessions to discuss the initiatives. During the virtual meetings, the Turnpike officials said they will announce the upcoming truck parking pilot initiatives, provide a high-level overview of the concepts and gather feedback from the trucking community.
“We are intentionally engaging the trucking community to better understand your needs, preferences, and operational considerations before moving forward with these initiatives,” said Eric Gordin, assistant traffic operations engineer with Florida Turnpike. “Our goal is to work collaboratively with industry partners to identify opportunities that enhance the overall experience for commercial drivers traveling on Florida’s Turnpike.”
According to Turnpike officials, the two truck parking pilot projects will help to “better understand parking demand and evaluate potential operational improvements.” Those projects include:
- Turkey Lake Service Plaza (Milepost 263) Tandem Lot Truck Parking Pilot
- Allows singles overflow parking within the tandem lot when parking spaces at the site are full, while continuing to accommodate tandem and double-trailer staging operations
- West Palm Beach Service Plaza (Milepost 94) Truck Parking Finder Pilot
- Provides real-time truck parking availability information for the site through a variety of communication channels, helping drivers make more informed parking decisions before arriving at the facility
Gordin said the meetings are intended to “help ensure the pilot projects are informed by the needs and experiences of the drivers and companies who will use them.”
The Turnpike officials will hold two virtual meetings – one in the morning and one in the evening – to help accommodate various schedules. The first will be held at 9 a.m. Eastern on July 16, with the second starting at 5:30 p.m. Eastern.
The sessions will be hosted on Microsoft Teams. You can register to attend the morning session here and the night session here. If you are attending on a mobile device, you will need to download the Teams app.
For those unable to attend, the groups said they would also accept feedback before or after the sessions. LL
