Fire crews from several towns were busy Sunday afternoon containing several brush fires along the Everett Turnpike and responding to a crash involving a vehicle and a fire truck.No one was injured in those fires. Merrimack Cpt. Shawn Farrell said they got a call reporting multiple brush fires along the southbound side of the Everett Turnpike in Merrimack sometime between 1 and 1:30 Sunday afternoon. He said there were about a half-dozen to a dozen fires total and crews from Nashua, Bedford and Amherst also responded. Farrell said the fire engine involved in this crash near Exit 12 was helping with the brush fires. He said the only person in the fire truck was the driver who was on his way back from refilling the truck’s water tank when a car crashed into its side. The fire truck driver safely removed the adult and four children from the car, who had minor injuries. The car caught fire, but that same firefighter was able to put it out. Farrell said there are no major damages from the brush fires.“There doesn’t seem to be any property damage. It’s mostly just stuff on the side of the highway that burned. The top layer of the leaves,” Farrell said. “Everyone worked really hard. Our mutual aid partners got here very quickly. We had some communication issues, but that’s par for the course for us.”Police are investigating the exact cause of the brush fires and the crash involving the fire truck.
