On July 5, as previously reported, there was an accident on I-95 North in Stafford County that shut down the northbound side of the highway for an extended period as it claimed the lives of two people.
Wheelman G. Andrews of Carrollton was driving a tractor-trailer hauling 78,000 pounds of beer, Virginia State Police reported. He attempted to make a lane change that resulted in a collision involving two vehicles, and ultimately, the truck turned over on top of the cars.
Both drivers died. Wheelman, age 58, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Mary Washington Hospital. After his release, he was taken into custody and charged with reckless driving, a misdemeanor. However, VSP announced that the investigation was still underway.
Fast forward to this week. A Stafford County grand jury added charges, handing up two felony counts of involuntary manslaughter, Sergeant Brent Coffey, a VSP public information officer confirmed.
Involuntary manslaughter is a Class 5 felony, which in Virginia, can carry a sentence of one to 10 years.
As of today, the felony charges had not yet been served on Wheelman, Coffey said. No further court dates had been set.
