A semi-truck driver died Wednesday afternoon from injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash on I-96 near Nash Highway.

Michigan State Police reported around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, the driver died from their injuries, and that westbound I-96 was fully reopened after the crash forced a four-hour closure. Authorities asked residents during the closure to find alternative routes of travel.
The crash happened around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday near Nash Highway, around 25 miles east of Grand Rapids. A semi-truck driver on westbound I-96 “failed to slow for a traffic backup and struck the rear of a passenger vehicle,” state police said in its initial report.
The passenger vehicle went into the median while the semi-truck continued forward, striking another semi-truck, according to state police. The impact caused the second semi-truck to hit a third semi-truck.

The crash forced a four-hour closure of the westbound lanes of I-96.
The now-deceased driver of the first semi-truck was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and flown to an area hospital with critical injuries. State police did not release any further information about them.
The passenger vehicle driver was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
State police said it will continue to investigate the crash. It did not indicate if the other two semi-truck drivers were injured.
