Edith Charlotte Hunt nee Hood passed away peacefully in Edina Minnesota on June 23, 2023, at the age of 98.
Edith was born on October 21, 1924, to Albert Adolph and Florence Annie Tavernier Hood in Wyckoff, New Jersey. Her childhood years were nothing short of idyllic growing up with her sister Flo, her brother Albert Jr. and their horse Katie in what was then rural New Jersey.
Edith met her future husband while a 14-year-old freshman at Ramsey High School. She was a cheerleader and occasionally danced the Hula with a Hawaiian band at a local restaurant. Buck had seen her cheer at the football games and with some friends showed up to watch her dance in 1939. They became engaged on her 19th birthday and on February 2, 1944, she married Wilber M (Buck) Hunt while he was on a 3 day leave from the US Coast Guard. After the war the couple settled in Fardale, NJ where their three daughters Barbara Ann, Kathie Lee and Sandra Kay Hunt were born.
In the mid 1950’s Edith and Buck built their dream home on Brookside Ave in Wyckoff, NJ. Buck joined Albert Hood’s trucking business in Paterson NJ and Edith busied herself making all of her own and her three daughters’ clothing. She also hand wove the beautiful, braided rugs that graced every room in their Brookside home,
Edith was a woman of many talents – an accomplished artist, an incredible seamstress, knitter, cross-stitcher and a poet for all occasions. Her amazing artistic talents may be traced to her Grandfather Thomas Hood who was a renowned silk designer in Paterson NJ.
When Buck left the trucking business at the age of 50, He and Edith began their second act as partners in a home crafting business (think Etsy before the internet). Together they produced hand-crafted leather “pocketbooks” and satchels – each custom made to reflect the buyer’s interests. Edith’s boundless creativity led her and Buck’s mutual love of flower gardening into another line of products – leaded glass plaques featuring pressed flowers arranged around a wedding invitation, a special life event, a favored quotation or a custom poem written by Edith.
Edith and Buck were inseparable and worked side-by-side until Buck’s untimely death in 1993 at the age of 71. Sad at the loss of her partner, but undaunted, Edith continued the family business on her own while making what would become new lifelong friends at a bereavement group. With her new friends Edith found a new interest in international travel.
In 2006 Edith, after living alone for 13 years, finally sold her beloved Wyckoff home and spent time with her daughter Kathie in New York State, her daughter Sandra in Texas and eventually settling in Minnesota near her daughter Barbara for the last 10 years.
Edith lit up any room she entered. She was famous for her outrageous Halloween costumes and her unflagging optimism and good cheer. Everyone who met her fell in love with her. Edith never failed to call every family member on their birthday and sing to them.
Edith was preceded in death by her mother Florence, her father Albert, her husband Buck, her sister Florence, sister Alberta and brother Albert Jr. She is survived by her Daughters Barbara Campbell, Kathie Behre, and Sandra Portner along with 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life for Edith Hunt will be held on August 22nd, 2023 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Red Wagon Pizza Company in Minneapolis.
