IONIA COUNTY, MI – The semi-truck driver involved in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on I-96 near Lowell has died.
Michigan State Police reported around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, that the driver had died from their injuries and that westbound I-96 has fully reopened.
State police did not release any further information about the driver.
The westbound lanes of the interstate had been closed since the crash, which happened around noon Wednesday.

Around that time, the semi-truck driver was headed westbound on I-96 when state troopers believe the driver failed to slow for a traffic backup and struck the back of a passenger vehicle.
The passenger vehicle went into the median while the semi-truck continued on, striking another semi-truck, state police said. The impact caused the second semi-truck to strike a third semi-truck.
The now-deceased driver of the first semi-truck was ejected from their vehicle during the crash and was flown to an area hospital with critical injuries, troopers said.

Troopers didn’t say whether the other two semi-truck drivers suffered injuries.
