DENVER (KDVR) — Police in Denver are investigating a domestic violence case tied to a viral doorbell video obtained by FOX31.
It shows a woman on foot as she’s chased by a man driving a pickup truck in front of several homes in South Denver. It happened last Friday in a neighborhood by Interstate 225 and Yosemite Street.
The Denver Police Department identified the situation as a domestic violence case.
“Healthy relationships don’t escalate to attempting to mow your partner down with a car,” said Franklin Erickson with The Initiative, a domestic violence survivor support group.
Erickson offered his take on what’s seen in the video.
“Very clearly a situation where this person needs help,” Erickson said. “Very clearly a situation where her safety is in jeopardy.”
Police said the woman was forced into the truck, managed to escape and got chased by the man driving the truck. The woman eventually got away, and the man was arrested the next day.
Signs of abuse in a relationship
Erickson said there are signs for people to recognize abuse in a relationship.
“This kind of thing starts with, you know, verbal abuse,” Erickson said.
Control is another sign — the urgent need to know.
“Their partner’s exact location at all times, going through their phone,” Erickson said.
Abuse can sometimes be followed by the caring or remorseful actions of the abuser.
“Until the next incident, where that behavior then may escalate,” Erickson said.
Support from groups like The Initiative comes in the form of providing safety plans for people who are abused.
“We want to make sure we’re helping them stay as safe as possible while the abuser is with them in a home,” Erickson said.
How to get help with domestic violence
The man driving the truck faces a list of charges, including second-degree kidnapping, extortion, third-degree assault and violation of a protection order.
