HARWINTON — A driver threatened another person with a shotgun during a road rage incident this week, according to state police.
Kenneth Mack, 64, of Harwinton is charged with second-degree breach of peace and first-degree threatening by displaying a firearm, Connecticut State Police said in a news release Friday. Mack’s bail was set at $1 million, state police said.
State police said an adult called 911 around 2:37 p.m. Thursday to report a road rage-fueled “threatening incident” in the area of Route 4 and Birge Park Road. While the person initially expressed reluctance to take things further, they eventually agreed to meet with Troop L troopers to provide more information, state police said.
During the meeting, the person told investigating troopers they had been traveling behind a red or maroon Dodge Ram pickup truck on Route 4 when the pickup abruptly came to a near-complete stop, police said. The person avoided colliding with the truck and told troopers they observed the truck’s driver “making hand gestures” through the window, according to police.
After both vehicles resumed traveling on Route 4, the pickup truck driver “brake checked” the person several times, police said — the act of suddenly breaking hard randomly. The pickup driver then pointed a shotgun out of the window in the person’s direction, according to police, who said the complainant gave them a description of the vehicle and its driver.
Using that information, police said they learned the pickup truck was registered to Mack. Troopers responded to Mack’s home and detained him in handcuffs, police added.
According to police, Mack denied carrying a gun in his truck but acknowledged that he owned firearms, including a shotgun. Mack also admitted an incident took place “involving the exchange of hand gestures and words only,” telling troopers that “he felt he had to defend himself,” police said.
Police said they seized two firearms, including a 12-gauge shotgun, during a search of Mack’s home. Mack was arrested and taken to Troop L in Litchfield where he was processed and charged, police added.
According to police, Mack was held in lieu of bail and transported to the New Haven Correctional Center. He was scheduled to appear in Torrington Superior Court in Torrington Nov. 3, police said.
