HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two people have lost their lives and two others have been hospitalized following a tragic crash earlier today at the intersection of South Laburnum Avenue and New Market Road in Henrico County.
Officers with the Henrico County Police Division responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash involving a truck a little after 6 a.m. on Thursday, May 2.
When they arrived, officers discovered a box truck overturned beside an SUV. The two female passengers in the SUV were killed in the crash. Henrico Police later identified the victims as 24-year-old Hilda Nunez and 20-year-old Lizbeth Alvarez.
The male driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and the truck driver — also male — had minor injuries. They have both since been discharged.
“Charges are currently pending in this crash against both drivers,” a Henrico Police spokesperson said.
8News spoke to the truck driver early this morning, who said he was driving a craft beer truck.
Eastbound lanes on New Market Road were closed for several hours following the crash, but have since reopened as officers have cleared the scene.
One nearby resident who lives on Burning Tree Road said he heard the crash when it happened. He told 8News that he’d originally thought the noise was his neighbor’s tractor.
Local residents near the crash site have expressed concerns about the safety of the area, citing previous accidents.
Police records indicate that there have been 64 crashes on Laburnum Avenue so far this year, including a fatal crash six months ago involving another box truck and a three-car crash a month later.
The cause of today’s crash is still under investigation — although authorities have mentioned that alcohol may have been a factor.
The Henrico Police Crash Team continues to investigate this incident. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call Henrico County Police Division at 804-501-5000.
This is a developing story, stay with 8News for updates.
