There will be assistance with housing, food and Medicaid applications. Attendees will also have access to health screenings, mental health counseling and onsite veterinary check-ins and immunizations for pets.
Attendees will also get a free meal prepared by the Runner’s Refuge organization.
“It is heartwarming to see these many organizations coming together to make a difference in the lives of families,” said Lisa Yehle, co-founder of 100% Otero.
Alamogordo Public Schools and Flo
Alamogordo Public Schools will be present along with Flo, a medical bus that will provide health screenings and other services to those present.
“So, Alamogordo Public Schools is doing this event for the month of October called Sock-tober where they collect socks, people can take new, unopened socks to any Alamogordo School to donate and they will bring those socks to this event,” Counseling Center’s Mobile Homeless Response Coordinator and 100% Otero Housing Sector Team Co-Chair, Nadia Sikes said.
“The whole premise of this event is so people can walk away with something tangible and know they received a good service attending. Alamogordo schools will offer hearing screenings, other health services and socks.”
Sikes said while attendees enjoy a meal prepared by the Runner’s Refuge food truck, 100% Otero will have volunteers asking attendees what services they may need and how they can help.
“Pastor Rick Hernandez has committed to cooking either tacos, spaghetti, or hot dogs and hamburgers, we have not decided yet, but we hope the volunteers that can speak to people at the tables find what the attendees are looking for and what they need,” Sikes said.
Sikes estimated there may be up to 200 people present but hopes there is more.
The New Mexico Department of Health will offer two programs for vaccinations and birth certificate retrievals.
“You can, see now in Alamogordo, you need your birth certificate to acquire your social security card or driver’s license and there will be Health Department representatives to provide that information,” Sikes said.
Sikes said the Eastern Regional Housing Authority from Roswell will also be present to put attendees on lists for possible housing in Alamogordo.
