WELCOME — The Welcome City Council met on Tuesday evening. Fire Chief, Jay Mulso, explained a request for a new grass fire truck. He said the budget had some extra and the committee was looking into a new bumper for the grass truck. The quotes were quite expensive and looking at the old grass fire truck it was deemed more frugal to get a new truck and bumper instead of just adding a new bumper to the old 1984 truck which is not reliable. Chief Mulso described the truck they now have as one of the units he is most concerned about. They have already disabled the foam system since it backwashed into the truck. The fire department has located a 550 Ford truck that would carry 400 gallons of water, as opposed to 300 now.
There would be a monitor on the front (this usually costs $15,000), the truck is higher than the old one, it would be capable of spraying water and driving at the same time. The quotes he has so far are preliminary quotes. The committee would like to keep the cost lower than $250,000. They are applying for USDA grants and other resources. The township was okay with the idea and would be included in the planning, payment and approval. The fire department got approval from the city council to continue their due diligence
concerning a new grass fire truck.
— The council reviewed a change in the discharge of firearms in the City ordinance and after discussion with Chief of Police, Trevor Yochim, they tabled the approval until the next meeting. Chief Yochim will review and change the things he needs to and bring it back to the council.
— The planning and zoning committee recommended the approval of the variance for the Fab Shop to sell hemp products. The owners had reviewed with the council at previous meetings what they sold and did not sell. The council approved the license for the Fab Shop
to sell hemp products.
— The City Works employee was asked to board up the windows and put a fence around the house on 4th Street that is abandoned to prevent accidents. The council complimented City Works employees for the good work on cleaning up the storage yard. They were asked to remove trees not just trim them in the alley of First and Second Street. There are a few hydrants that need repair, one was finished and the others are planned to be done. The second City Works employee, Dave B., needs to get a Class B license soon. He reported that his paperwork was already done but he must get an appointment. The council asked that he get an appointment ASAP.
— The council discussed the lighting of the shelter house and suggested the Parks committee change to a new company for the work since there has been no work for two years from the company they previously contacted. They suggested to add hand dryers to the bathrooms also.
— The council discussed the immediate need for someone to pump the waste water treatment plant before winter. Several suggestions for someone to do the work were given but none was available. They suggested the City Works contact the person who did it before and ask that it be done one more time. That would give the council more time to find a solution for next year.
The next meeting of the Welcome City Council is set for 6 p.m. on
Nov. 2, at Welcome City Hall.
