This year’s Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence award winner is U.S. Army veteran Cory Troxell, a driver for Dallas-based Stevens Transport.
Announced at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C., Troxell was presented with a brand-new Kenworth T680 – donated by Kenworth for the ninth consecutive year.
Troxell’s family has strong military ties, with his grandfather, father and uncle serving with distinguished careers. He enlisted in the Army in 2004 and served 20 years. In 2009, he was severely wounded and was awarded a Purple Heart for his military service.
Similar to his decision to serve in the military, Troxell embarked on a career in trucking based upon a strong family connection to the industry.
“Thank you to everyone who voted and contributed to one of our largest voter turnouts ever,” Fastport said on its Facebook page. “Thanks to Kenworth, Hiring our Heroes and all who made this possible. Together, we honor and support veterans transitioning into the trucking industry.”
Transition Trucking also presented cash awards to this year’s finalists.
Douglas Couch, a driver for Roehl Transport, Inc. and a Navy veteran, was named runner-up and received $10,000.
Earning $5,000 as finalists for this year’s Transition Trucking award were Shawn Haley (U.S. Marine Corps, Veriha Trucking LLC) and Billy Taylor (U.S. Coast Guard, Werner Enterprises).
“These individuals have successfully transitioned from military service to driving careers, and their stories inspire others to follow suit,” said Brad Bentley, president of Fastport. “They truly embody the potential of the next generation of trucking professionals.”
As part of the prize packages, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association gifted memberships to all of the finalists. The Association also gifted the full Truck To Success program to Couch.
To be eligible for the Transition Trucking award, a driver must be a legal U.S. resident; a military veteran or member of the National Guard or Reserves; a graduate of a PTDI-certified, NAPFTDS- or CVTA-member driver training school, with a valid CDL; have been employed by any for-hire carrier or private fleet that has pledged to hire veterans; and have been hired as a CDL driver after Jan. 1, 2023.
